About Tracy van der Zwan

Tracy van der Zwan is a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist whose background is as distinctive as her clinical approach. She holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Business Administration from Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada, and a Master of Social Service from Bryn Mawr College of Social Work and Social Research. She also supervises graduate-level counseling students, bringing the same rigor to mentoring the next generation of clinicians that she brings to her own practice.

Tracy’s unusual combination of business training and clinical expertise gives her a particular fluency with the pressures that high-achieving individuals, professionals, and families navigate — the kind that don’t always fit neatly into a diagnostic category but are no less real for it.

Areas of Focus

Tracy works with adolescents, adults, couples, and families, and has developed particular depth in the relational and transitional challenges that tend to bring people to therapy:

  • Couples and family therapy — navigating conflict, improving communication, and deepening connection
  • Relational dynamics — peer relationships, family conflict, and the interpersonal complexities of personal and professional life
  • Workplace stress — navigating difficult dynamics, leadership pressures, and professional identity
  • Life transitions — career changes, relationship shifts, identity, and the moments that ask us to redefine ourselves
  • Adolescent and young adult development — identity, autonomy, peer struggle, and the transition to adulthood
  • Anxiety, depression, and mood-related concerns
  • Family conflict and communication

Approach to Therapy

Tracy takes a holistic, integrative approach to therapy — one grounded in the belief that lasting change requires understanding the whole person, not just the presenting problem. She works to create a space that is genuinely safe and nonjudgmental, where clients can explore difficult feelings, examine unhelpful patterns, and begin to
move forward with greater clarity.

Her style is characterized by empathic listening, thoughtful validation, and the kind of curious, insightful questioning that helps clients see themselves and their situations in a new light. She draws from a range of evidence-based frameworks, tailoring her approach to each individual’s needs, goals, and pace — whether that calls for deeper exploratory work or more targeted, practical strategies.

Life Transition & Career Coaching

In addition to psychotherapy, Tracy offers life transition coaching and career management coaching — a natural extension of her business background and clinical expertise. For clients who are navigating professional crossroads, re-evaluating their career trajectories, or managing the emotional weight of significant life changes, Tracy brings a uniquely integrated perspective that bridges the personal and the professional.
