Sleep Is Not Downtime

Sleep is arguably the most biologically consequential state your body enters in any 24-hour period — and the one we understand least and protect least in modern life. Your brain cycles through four distinct stages in roughly 90-minute cycles. Stage three is slow-wave deep sleep, the most physically restorative phase. REM is where the most remarkable neurological work happens.

The Glymphatic System: Overnight Brain Washing

During deep sleep, your brain activates the glymphatic system — a waste-clearance network discovered in 2013 that flushes toxic proteins, including beta-amyloid and tau, the same proteins implicated in Alzheimer's disease. A full night of restorative sleep contains five 90-minute cycles — roughly 7.5 hours. If you are consistently sleeping less than that, you are almost certainly cutting into deep sleep or REM, or both.
